Modern Funeral Etiquette: What to Know Before You Go

April 22, 2026

At Dancy Funeral Home, we understand that attending a funeral can bring uncertainty—especially when it comes to etiquette. While traditions still hold meaning, today’s services are more flexible and centered around celebrating life. If you're joining us in Caldwell, NJ, here are a few thoughtful tips to help you feel comfortable.

Be Present, Not Perfect

There’s no dress code set in stone. While respectful attire is appreciated, we believe your presence matters more than your outfit. Neutral colors and neat clothing are just fine—what’s most important is that you came to show love and support.

Share Memories Freely

Don’t worry about saying the “right thing.” A kind word, a hug, or simply listening means a lot to grieving families. Feel free to share a favorite memory or comforting story—it’s those moments that help celebrate a life well lived.

Stay Off Script

At Dancy Funeral Home, we believe funerals are personal. You don’t need to know every tradition. Just follow the lead of the service, silence your phone, and be respectful of others’ emotions.

Come As You Are

Whether you’re family, a friend, or a coworker, you’re welcome here. We honor individuality and understand that grief looks different for everyone. Your presence brings comfort, and that’s what matters most.

For more than a century, the Prout family legacy has been a guiding presence in the West Essex region. Beginning in 1924 and continuing through today, the Prout name has become synonymous with trust, service, and an unwavering commitment to the community. Deeply rooted in bettering the lives of those they serve, the Prout family takes great pride in exceptional customer service, clear and compassionate communication, and the ability to guide families through each step of the funeral process with care, dignity, and efficiency. With generations of experience, the Prout family tree runs deep within the funeral profession. The Prout family’s connection to Caldwell and the surrounding communities is long-standing and deeply personal. Bob Prout grew up in Caldwell, attended St. Aloysius School, and was actively involved in parish life, scouting, and West Essex 4-H. His commitment to service extended beyond the classroom and church, reflecting the values instilled in him from an early age. His father, Frank Prout, and brother, Tom Prout, also dedicated themselves to the community through their service with the West Essex First Aid Squad, exemplifying the family’s longstanding tradition of helping others in times of need. Continuing this legacy, Julia R. Prout is a proud graduate of Mount Saint Dominic Academy, further strengthening the family’s ties to the area.

As Dancy Funeral Home begins a new chapter the Prout way, we are proud to reintroduce ourselves through a thoughtful balance of continuity and innovation. Re-introduction does not mean starting over. It does not mean changing who we are at our core. Instead, it means strengthening the foundation that families have trusted for years while enhancing the ways we serve them today. Continuity feels purposeful. Innovation feels dynamic. When these two elements coexist, they create a meaningful refresh—one that honors the past while embracing the future. For the Prout family, continuity means preserving the traditions, dignity, and personal care that families have come to expect from Dancy Funeral Home. A sense of security has always been central to their approach. Families can take comfort in knowing that long-standing values remain intact, guided by deep respect for each family’s unique wishes, beliefs, and legacy. Preserving each family’s individualized mission is not simply a philosophy—it is a responsibility the Prout family holds close to their heart.
